Clock Rewinders on a Book Binge 4/29/12: Tahereh Mafi and Veronica Rossi Edition

Clock Rewinders on a Book Binge is the weekly recap feature created byAmanda @ On a Book Bender and Tara @ 25 Hour Books, where they shamelessly plug each other, share the fantastic posts, giveaways, books they’ve received or whatever else they’ve found and loved by other awesome bloggers (or authors!) during the week, and talk about the books they plan on reading in the coming week.

Intro

Hi there. This is my first Clock Rewinders post, which is a feature that has been around for some time now, but that I am just only now joining. Unless you’ve been living under a rock (which is where I live most of my time), then you already know that the YA Blogging Community was rocked this week in light of the news about The Story Siren and Plagiarism. If you are not aware or don’t know the details of what happened, Parajunkee has a good post stating her opinion and with links to the sites where you can find more information as well as a post explaining how to boycott a blog.

My stand on this issue is simple. Plagiarism is wrong, no matter who does it. Because of this, I am no longer participating in the “In My Mailbox” meme that is hosted by The Story Siren. I feel that I cannot, in good conscience, continue supporting and linking back to TSS after all that’s happened. I simply cannot, and will not.

Post Recap

TGIF/Follow Friday: I discuss what I normally do when the “Reading Blues” hit and which book characters have disappointed me.
Waiting on Wednesday: Insurgent by Veronica Roth was my pick this week.
Top Ten Tuesday: This week’s topic was my all time favorite characters in books.
Book Review: I review The Selection by Kiera Cass.
Blog Tour and Book Review: I share my review of Clockwise by Elle Strauss as well as a giveaway of a book written by another writer in Elle Strauss’ writers’ circle (open through 4/28).
Blog Tour, Excerpt, and Book Spotlight: I share an Excerpt of Whisper of Memory by Brinda Berry as well as spotlight The Waiting Booth by the same author and a giveaway the author is kindly running for a Kindle Touch and 20 Romance Trading Cards (open through end of day today).

Books And Things I Received

Total Epicness

I attended the Spring Into The Future event in Miami where authors Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me) and Veronica Rossi (Under the Never Sky) were present. This event was so much fun that my eye makeup was all smudged at the end of it because of so much ugly laughing, actually crying almost. Tahereh and Veronica are super hilarious and when they’re together they’re a riot. I got my picture taken with them…
…and then they signed my books…

…and gave me swag…
…and if these ladies weren’t amazing enough already, when I went up to Tahereh and Veronica and said, “Hi, I’m JJ”, Tahereh goes “Oh, you’re JJ iReads!“. Needless to say, I was all like “Squeeeeee!!!” because I was beyond ecstatic that she actually remembered me from Twitter. Veronica was super sweet and I just love her demeanor when she talks and that kind smile she has. It was a night I will never forget,.

    1. She is beyond adorable. The whole time we were laughing because of her. She wasn't even trying to be funny, it just comes out naturally, LOL.

  4. I am so glad you put a link to Parajunkee's post, because I was totally under a rock all week. I was wondering why the IMM links were so low, when I finally got around to doing mine this morning. I feel crappy that I participated in light of what happened.

I totally loved Under the Never Sky & can't wait to get to Shatter Me on my shelf. Awesome on getting to meet them both.

    1. After reading your comment I got curious and went to see. You're right, the link count is really low. Guess a lot of blogs are either taking a break or decided to do something else.

I loved both, but I actually liked Shatter Me better. Most people tell me that they liked Under the Never Sky better than Shatter Me, but I guess that just depends on your tastes. They're both pretty great.

  5. We had a splendid time. Thank you for saving us seats and joining us for dinner afterwards. It's always a treat to meet new authors with reading fiends like myself. 🙂

  6. This is a really cool feature! I love that it shows a recap of what you are reading and events you did instead of just what books you got. I might have to join. And that's soo cool that you got to meet Tahereh and Veronica!!

    1. That's what I liked it about it in comparison with the other book-haul type memes that are out there. When I saw the format for this meme, I was like "this is the one for me".

  7. Welcome to Clock Rewinders!

I'm so jealous that you got to go to a signing. There are NEVER any where I live, so I live in a constant state of jealousy as far as signings go. Even awesomer is that a) Tahereh Mafi knew your blog, and b) You got to go with Smash!

    1. I used to think that about Miami and was infinitely jealous of Texas bloggers for their abundance of book blogger related events. LOL.

Luckily we have an indie bookstore here that is super amazing and hosts all these wonderful events.

Smash is pretty awesome, so that makes the experience even better 😉

  8. Tahereh Mafi's supposed to be coming to my area soon but I can't find any info on when or where. Just vague rumors. It's making me a little frantic. I'm super jealous that you got to meet her.
*goes back to scouring the internet for information*

    1. Oh man! Nothing on the "Spring Into The Future" Facebook page? That's where all the info is on her tour.

  9. I can't begin to explain how glad I am that despite the many hate-mails the VICTIMS apparently got, there are bloggers who are mature about it. I think I would have cried if the bloggers I follow on a regular basis were all "No, it's fine, really.". I mean, if someone decides to still continue doing IMMs and all, that is fine with me. But the rest of the drama is just too much to bear.

Anyway.. Soo jealous to see your two signed copies! If only I lived in the US, too! ;_; And as always: Happy Reading!

    1. Thanks Patricia. Like you, if any blogger I know decides to continue doing IMM, I'm not going to think any less of them. Not participating is my way of taking a stand, but that may not be the same for someone else.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  10. Ooh I hope you love This is Not A test as much as I did! And I plan to read Revived in a few days! 🙂 And I wish more authors came this way I don't get to meet anyone! Booo.

  11. Woohoo!! Looks like you had an awesome week 🙂 I cannot wait to get my hands on INSURGENT. I feel like I've been waiting forevah for this book…and for SHINE! It's going to be a fabulous week for YA!

And as always, we had a GREAT time on Saturday at the author event. Tahereh and Veronica really were the cutest!

Thanks for visiting JJiReads and commenting. I just recently uninstalled the IntenseDebate commenting system since it was causing problems with the blog's load time. Any comments previously made using that platform will not be visible but are definitely not gone. Comments made as entries to giveaways will be counted whether they were made in either IntenseDebate or the Blogger commenting system.
