Book Review: Vanya and the Wild Hunt (Vanya #1)

I couldn’t resist diving into Vanya and the Wild Hunt, especially given that I’ve enjoyed the author’s adult fiction before. The allure of a British Indian protagonist navigating the challenges of finding her place in the world—while having conversations with books—struck a chord with me. Add to that the intrigue of a magical academy and a looming threat from mythical creatures, and I knew I was in for an enchanting read.

Vanya, our eleven-year-old heroine, lives above her family’s quaint bookshop, a setting that instantly feels like home. When a monstrous threat forces her to tap into her inherited powers, she finds herself at Auramere, a magical academy designed for kids like her. The premise is wonderfully imaginative, but it’s the heart of Vanya’s journey that truly shines. As a character, she is layered—navigating the complexities of her Indian identity, her ADHD, and the universal struggle of feeling out of place. The author encapsulates Vanya’s voice with a delightful mix of sass, vulnerability, and relentless curiosity. I often found myself chuckling at her one-liners, especially when her stubbornness led her into trouble—because isn’t that what makes a good adventure?

What I truly appreciated was how the author presented Vanya’s ADHD in a relatable manner, showcasing both the strengths and insecurities that come with it. I saw glimpses of myself in her descriptions—her long braid reminded me of my own childhood hair adventures! The narrative flows in Vanya’s first-person perspective, pulling us into her world where laughter and eye rolls coexist, bringing an authentic touch that resonates strongly with young readers (and the young at heart).

Vanya’s journey is rich with folklore from various cultures, blending mythical creatures that kept me engaged and enlightened. As someone familiar with Hindu Puranas, I loved recognizing the stories woven into the tapestry of this narrative. However, I can’t help but reflect on the book’s pacing. The first 35% felt a bit slow, but once the action kicked in, I was fully invested. The world-building is so lush and vibrant that I nearly forgot my initial concern as the plot barreled forward toward a cliffhanger I wish I’d known about beforehand. A heads-up on that would have set my expectations right!

Illustrations peppered throughout the book make for a charming visual experience, particularly the ones featuring Reya—simply stunning! And let’s not forget Vanya’s dad, whose quirky nicknames brought a chuckle that lightened the mood amidst the rising tension. His creativity reminds us that even in challenging times, humor has a way of shining through.

In summary, Vanya and the Wild Hunt is not just an exciting adventure; it’s a heartfelt exploration of identity, family, and coming into one’s own. With its elaborate world-building and diverse characters, this story has series potential—though fair warning: prepare for the cliffhanger! I can’t wait to see what the next installment holds; in the meantime, I’ll be on the lookout for that ARC.
