Review of Purr-fect Potions (Nine Lives Magic, #4)
From the moment I picked up Purr-fect Potions by Jennifer Estep, I felt that familiar electric charge that comes with diving back into a beloved series. The Nine Lives Magic series has been a delightful journey filled with enchantment, mystery, and a touch of whimsy, and this latest installment did not disappoint—though it did throw some curveballs my way!
Set against the backdrop of an enchanting world with a perfect blend of magic and cozy mystery, Purr-fect Potions picks up right after the previous book, with our protagonist Cora and her familiar, the sassy Selene, on a pressing quest to find Aunt Lavender. However, things take an intriguing turn when a famous treasure hunter, Tabitha Blake, arrives in town, adding layers of tension and uncertainty to the hunt. The premise alone had me eagerly turning pages, craving the next twist and turn in Cora’s adventure.
What truly stands out in this installment is the emotional plot dynamics, especially regarding Cora’s love life with Cliff. A rift appears thanks to Cliff’s overbearing mother, and I found myself sharing Cora’s frustration. The way Estep navigates these relationships feels authentic, though I must admit to feeling annoyed by how easily they seemed to unravel. Seeing a once-strong relationship face challenges like these can be disheartening for a reader who has grown attached to the characters.
Selene, usually the snarky source of comic relief, took a sharp turn into mean territory this time. Watching her treat Cora with disdain was jarring, and I couldn’t help but wonder what more Cora had to do to earn her respect. There’s a fine line between humorous banter and outright meanness, and Selene pushed that boundary quite a bit in this book.
Estep’s writing style remains engaging, with Amanda Ronconi’s narration enhancing the experience further. Ronconi perfectly captures the tone of the story, making even the most mundane scenes shimmer with a touch of magic. This time, however, I felt a shift in pacing; the absence of a local mystery provided a different reading experience, which at times left me longing for the cozy mysteries that first drew me to the series.
Despite the challenges faced in Purr-fect Potions, there are glimmers of hope and progress that left me eager for the next book. Cora’s bond with Aunt Lavender remains central, and I can’t wait to see how this mystery unfolds. The ending is tantalizing and sets the stage beautifully for the next installment.
In conclusion, Purr-fect Potions may have left me with mixed feelings, but my affection for the series remains strong. This is a great read for fans of cozy paranormal mysteries who appreciate character development and are willing to sit through some turbulence for the sake of growth. It’s clear that this series has many exciting chapters left, and I’m all in for the ride! If you enjoy a well-crafted world filled with magic, sass, and a sprinkle of romance—this series and its latest installment are definitely for you.
I can’t wait to share more thoughts when my full review goes live at Books of My Heart on September 4th!
