When I first stumbled upon Tara Lush’s Eat, Pray, Hex, I was drawn in by the unique blend of cozy mystery and paranormal elements—two genres I’ve come to love, albeit separately. Most of my cozy mystery adventures haven’t involved the supernatural, but something about this series piqued my interest. Perhaps it was the promise of a quirky small-town setting in Florida and a protagonist grappling with unexpected powers that made me curious enough to step outside my usual reading comfort zone. I’m so glad I did, because this story enveloped me in a delightful mix of humor, warmth, and a touch of the odd.
Amelia, our central character, is a breath of fresh air. Upon inheriting a hotel from an estranged aunt, she sets out to evaluate her new property with intentions of selling it off. What she doesn’t anticipate is being unwittingly pulled into a decades-old murder mystery connected to the hotel. I found Amelia’s journey both relatable and compelling; her struggle to balance newfound abilities with the responsibilities thrust upon her by fate made for a captivating experience.
One of the most delightful aspects of Eat, Pray, Hex is its colorful cast of secondary characters. Each person feels uniquely crafted, showcasing a refreshing diversity that adds layers to the narrative. The town practically vibrates with life through these characters, creating a rich tapestry that enhances Amelia’s story. Despite the initial array of names and personalities thrown my way, Lush manages the pacing so well that I never felt overwhelmed. Instead, I found myself swept along, eagerly absorbing every engaging detail.
As for the mystery itself, I’ll admit it’s not overly intricate. However, that didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Rather, the simplicity of the cold case serves as an inviting foundation upon which Amelia’s development and the town’s quirks can unfold. The resolution brought satisfying closure to the victim while allowing Amelia’s powers to blossom—a lovely metaphor for personal growth. It tied everything up neatly with a bow, leaving me intrigued for what lies ahead in the series.
On to the audio aspect: Anna Maste’s narration brought a charming Southern twang that felt fitting for the setting. There were moments, however, where I wished for a bit more tempo; the slower pace initially made it a challenge to engage with the story fully. Yet, once I adjusted the speed to 1.5x, the rhythm clicked perfectly, and I was swept into the narrative’s flow. Maste’s talent for accents and emotional delivery kept the world vivid, and I look forward to hearing more from her in the future.
Ultimately, Eat, Pray, Hex is a charming kickoff to what promises to be an enjoyable series.
