Review of I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-C…

I have to admit, I feel some type of way about I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-C… by Kimberly Lemming. Sigh. This was supposed to be a romp full of fun and quirky adventures, but instead, it left me feeling like I was digging through a salad of random ingredients to find the delicious greens I love. Normally, I can’t get enough of Lemming’s unique voice, especially in her Mead Mishaps series, but this one was really tough for me. Maybe it was my mood, maybe it was work, or maybe it was just because my dog barked—whatever it was, I found myself checking the percentage more often than I usually do. And for a KL book? Heartbreaking.

So, what did I think of the book? Our protagonist, Dorothy—or Dory for short—is pursuing her PhD in wildlife biology when her life takes a wild turn. First, she’s dealing with a lion that becomes one of her best friends (yes, you read that right, and she names him Toto—cue the Wizard of Oz references!). Then, just when you think things couldn’t get stranger, she’s abducted by aliens to be… observed for her reproductive compatibility. Yep, it’s just as bonkers as it sounds.

The writing, while sprinkled with KL’s signature humor—like the hilarity of a lion named Toto—sometimes struggled under the weight of its own plot. I appreciated the moments that made me giggle, but they felt rare amidst the confusion. I was so ready for those hilarious banters to shine through, but they didn’t emerge as much as I expected. The pacing faltered, especially in the first half, where it took me what felt like an eternity to break through the dense atmosphere of exposition before Dory, Sol, and Lok launched into their steamy encounters.

Speaking of steam, the romance does hit hard and fast once it picks up, featuring some surprisingly sizzling moments. As someone who isn’t usually into MMF dynamics, I found myself in a bit of a whirlwind. Some parts were steamy enough to make me blush, but I wanted more buildup—those moments felt a touch rushed to me. And the dirty talk? Who knew aliens could be so filthy! 🤭

I also have to highlight the nostalgic touches that made me smile, like the Tamagotchi reference—what a throwback! And Dory’s sidekick, Toto, eventually grew on me. He may have started as a source of frustration, but his protective nature and eventual queen-finding journey added a layer of warmth to the story.

Yet, the book is not without its flaws. I craved more context and character buildup. Why were we introduced to the bad guy so late? And those dinosaurs—what role did they truly have in the plot? Every decision felt tangled, straying too far from the succinct, engaging narrative that Lemming usually crafts.

Overall, I think I might need to revisit this one, although it stands as my least favorite KL book so far. While I loved the moments that sparkled, I craved a more cohesive story. Despite any shortcomings, this book might resonate with readers looking for something unexpected and edgy—if you enjoy sci-fi romance with a twist, this might just hit the spot.

So, if you’re in the mood for a book that’s a little unconventional, give this a try—but maybe keep your expectations in check. Let’s see how the next adventure unfolds!
